Planning a trip to visit family and trying to figure out the best route. I’d like to bring a firearm with me, but going through New York State makes that tricky. I know they have some strict laws, which adds a layer of stress to the whole journey. Avoiding NY adds a ridiculous amount of drive time, and I've got a limited window for this trip. Just curious if anyone else has dealt with this situation and what you decided to do. It’d be great to hear how you navigated the laws or if you found a better route.

That's what I've been reading - and seems like thats perfectly legal. Really dislike traveling above the Mason Dixon line for sure.

A couple years ago we drove to VT from SC and the route we chose put us driving thru NY...i stopped around Scranton, PA and cleared the pistols, separated the ammo from the guns, locked the guns in one case and the ammo in another...drove thru NY without stopping...might have been more than I needed to do but i took no chances with SC plates etc

Don’t get stopped and you won’t have a problem anywhere! Seriously, I just avoid states like NY and New Jersey. These days I’m not going anywhere I can’t carry

This is why I don't go north. I'll go west. Most of those states have laws similar to SC.

Is flying an option? I hate it, but sometimes it's necessary

Unload and lock it in the trunk when you go through NY is the best bet...
^^^ This! Don't overthink it or be paranoid, I grew up in NJ, traveled with guns in the car all the time, still go there and sometimes transport guns to and from. My nephew is a cop in NJ, they're not out to get you, trust me

Also grew up in PRNJ. Crazy laws and mentality up there like Marlin model 60 .22 a high capacity rifle due to >15 rd mag tube. Escaped 25 years ago and never looked back.

For extra bonus safety margin empty any magazines as some states like PA/NJ/NY consider mag ‘part of the gun’ and loaded mag = loaded gun even with magwell empty.

And yes - SC plates make you stick out.
Don’t forget the tiny corner of MD if you go up I-81 to Scranton . . . MD might be the worst.
