Been mulling over the idea of building my first AR-15 for a bit now. Finally started diving into parts and it's a bit overwhelming to be honest. There are deals out there, but I'm not sure what's worth it and what's just hype.

I'm leaning toward a basic build, probably sticking with 5.56. People keep telling me that's a solid choice for a newbie, but I'm curious if anyone has other suggestions.

Also, are there brands that are a definite no-go? Like ones that tend to have quality issues? I'm trying to avoid making mistakes, but I know there are hidden costs and pitfalls I'm probably not seeing. Should I just get a pre-built one instead?

Would love to hear about lessons learned, especially if you've been in my shoes before. Anything that you wish someone had told you before you started building?

As long as everything is Mil-Spec it should fit together and function well. They are not difficult to build but there are several tiny detent balls and springs that are easy to lose. 5.56 is a good caliber because of plenty of ammo and its a surprising accurate round. I have a Radical Arms that was about $400. out the door and it's a sub MOA rifle. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Spend your money on the barrel bolt carrier group and trigger

Larue triggers run about $115 and are about the best value for money in a solid trigger

I second this.

Palmetto State Armory has some excellent deals if you want to start at the entry level to get familiar with the platform. Trigger and barrel swaps are easy if you want something better later.

If you're not too experienced, don't let BCA entice you with their prices. The prices are great, but you never know what you're gonna get, and what might be required to make it work.

In regards to triggers, the best, for the money that I've found is the drop-in cassette trigger that PSA often puts on sale. It's the CMC trigger that's about 3#. Helluva deal when they run it for $89.
