Bolt action or semi-auto for deer

I'm old school, use a bolt action. My buddy uses an AR-10. We argue about it every season. He says quick follow-up shots matter. I say one good shot is all you need. What do you guys actually hunt with?

If you need a quick follow-up you did it wrong and probably shouldn't have taken the shot. (this is me being judgmental).

I want a gun that I connect with, and AR's do nothing for me, but I'm also not partial to plastic stocks or stainless steel in a bolt rifle. My father had a Browning BAR semi in 30-06 for a deer rifle that I liked a lot. Very personal issue, if you don't care about anything but putting meat in the freezer go with whatever works, and there's no shortage of affordable capable options these days, otherwise it's whatever floats your boat and enhances the experience

There's no better only preference be it technical or sentimental. I've hunted with a T-C muzzle loader, a JM Marlin 336XL, multiple bolt guns, and killed my first deer with a Remington 7600 in .270Win. I do agree with Ras61 in that AR's don't appeal to my hunting sense although I would probably use mine if I ever hog or varmint hunting, especially at night.
