I need a slug gun for deer hunting in shotgun-only zones. The problem is, I went to a shop and test-fired one that nearly sent me to the chiropractor...there's gotta be options that are effective but don't feel like a cannon, right?

There are 20ga slug guns.
Not sure if H&R still makes their break open single shot?

Also in 12 ga if you are taking less than 100 yd shots you can use low recoil slugs.

Try and find 7/8 oz @ 1250 fps or thereabouts.

If you need a slug gun for shotgun only zones, pick a 20 gauge or a 12 set up for reduced recoil and use a rifled barrel or rifle choke for real accuracy with slugs. I prefer a gas operated semi or a heavier pump because they soak up recoil better than lightweight guns, and a good recoil pad plus reduced power loads keeps your shoulder happy. Zero the gun at the distances you expect to shoot and practice from the positions you hunt so you know your point of impact, you’ll get effective hits without feeling like you were punched

Browning makes a gas semi auto slug gun but they're proud of it
Good to know, I'll check out Browning's gas semi-autos. Any experience with specific models or recoil-reducing mods (recoil pads, gas tuning, muzzle brakes)

Any brand recommendations?
