Were older guns made better than modern ones?

I’ve been thinking about this lately, were older firearms really made with better craftsmanship and longevity or do today’s materials and machining actually win out?

These days, cheap rifles can hit tiny targets right out of the box! You used to need a special gun guy to do that 50 years ago

I was looking over a Gen 2 Ruger American. You can buy one for 5-600 dollars. 30 years ago a rifle of that quality would have been several thousand dollars. That being said, older guns like old Smiths,A-5 Brownings and American and British side by sides were the ones you can see and feel the quality and pride of workmanship in.
